Mosque designs that tower above the rest

Design & Display Structures has once again shown it has mastered the design of traditional religious architecture, when it came to providing the Jamia Mosque in Hyde, Manchester, with a host of Islamic features for its new three storey extension.

The GRP expert’s £20,000 contract put its design proficiency to the test to sympathetically create five minarets. These traditional Islamic towers are 3m tall, one of which is topped with a golden Hilal - an important crescent moon symbol.

At each corner the minarets stand tall, adding a significant boost to the building’s overall brickwork appearance. Three of the towers also line up along the centre of the building to create an impressive aesthetic.

To develop the best and most authentic towers, Design & Display Structures worked closely with Lancashire based Bruce & Bruce Architects. Drawing from its familiarity with religious architecture, the company was able to help the architect finalise the dramatic design.

GRP’s lightweight nature was perfect for these structures, as it greatly reduced the loadings on the primary steelwork when compared to concrete alternatives. Able to be produced in quarter sections, tooling costs were kept to a minimum.

With its formidable design skills, coupled with 3D modelling capabilities, Design & Display Structures is ideally suited to helping architects make their creative vision a reality.

This made it the perfect company to rise to the challenge of providing Islamic architectural features that stayed true to tradition, whilst fitting with the architect’s design.

Design & Display Structures’ work is now complete on site. It marks another successful project in a long line of religious developments. The company now moves forward to a number of new mosque projects, due for completion in late autumn 2008.
