Barton Square Cupola Project Title: Barton Square Cupola URL Source: https://www.design-and-display.co.uk/projects/barton-square-cupola Markdown Content: ### Main Contractor: Vinci Construction ### Architect: Corstorphine + Wright ### Project Duration: 1 year ### Products: towers & turrets mosques & temples roof cladding Project Information: -------------------- The challenge - to design develop a large scale lightweight cupola feature to encompass a lightning protection system topping out the 34m dia dome soaring above the retail outlet in an architecturally attractive fashion. Being centrally positioned above a huge retail building the access to the dome peak would be very difficult so the feature needed to be capable of being built at car park level for hoisting as a pre-assembled structure, landed on top of the dome and final connections made in the quickest possible time. D&D presented a cupola design that broke it down to a kit of repeating modular sections that functioned as necessary to clad around a primary steelwork frame whilst meeting the aesthetic requirements of the Architect. The body was created in 1/6 th segments and the skirting in 1/12 th segments so the joint lines complemented each other. This enabled repeating manufacturing of panels save for one into which D&D incorporated the access hatch necessary for final installation and future access for maintaining the lightning protection system. Site assembly and inspection could then all take place at ground level utilising mobile towers rather than high level scaffolding therefore substantially lower construction H&S risks for all parties concerned in that phase of works. D&D used a combination of Vectorworks and Rhino to produce the necessary 3D/2D fabrication and installation drawings Benefits - The savings afforded by the D&D GRP construction approach were many. By being a low weight low maintenance prefinished RAL colour ref material it avoided high level assembly and post decoration in what is clearly a very tricky location to access both during construction phase and in the future. To client benefit the cupola in its aged copper colour will stand proud as a highly visible retail customer beacon for years to come. We use Vectorworks and Rhino enabling us to receive, import and export DWG and DXF drawing formats from many other CAD applications such as Autocad and Microstation. The versatile PDF format is used extensively to distribute information, particularly useful for those clients who don’t have easy access to the more specialist software or viewers. The nature of our work means 3D modelling is a central component to our design processes. This is a useful tool throughout the contract, demonstrating to our clients, production facilities and site installation team how the proposed solution fits together. As a consequence of this careful design process Design & Display Structures will incorporate a range of reinforcement materials for additional stiffening and to provide fixing grounds which enable third party connections. Some of these materials will be encapsulated, others attached directly to the GRP flanges. Reinforcing materials range from core mat and honeycomb through to plywood and steel strips of various gauges. In addition, GRP flanges and webs will play a critical part in the structural strength. The final design will be project specific to account for engineer determined wind, snow and live loads. For those more technically minded: VectorWorks offers a full range of 2D, 3D, production management and presentation capabilities for all phases of the design process. In addition to offering traditional CAD tools, VectorWorks goes beyond CAD and allows its users to design with real-world components. Users can sketch ideas with lines, arcs, and circles, then build and document designs with real-world objects, such as walls and windows, cabinets and stairs, plants and patterned walkways, lights and trusses, and more. The objects automatically display both in 2D and 3D views. VectorWorks 3D models can be generated out of 2D drawings, and vice versa. VectorWorks is able to communicate with other applications via DXF/DWG file translation and by importing and exporting a variety of file formats which include SketchUp®, 3ds, Shapefile/SHP, JPG, TIF, EPS, GIF, and BMP. Support for IGS, SAT, and STL allows users to send VectorWorks models to 3D printers and rapid prototyping machines. Automatic data tracking capabilities allows users to generate schedules, reports and materials lists based on the information contained in a design. Advanced graphics capabilities allow users to create client presentations and sketch rendering technology enables hard-lined drawings to take the appearance of soft, hand-sketched illustrations. For more advanced 3D rendering capabilities, the plug-in RenderWorks provides both realistic and artistic effects. These are then dismantled and packed in a variety of formats as necessary for shipping by lorry or container as appropriate to the scheme size and site location. Most screens are constructed single skin with the projection surface facing inside. The option to add a cosmetic double skin is available though generally more appropriate to screens erected in the office environment or public viewing. Horizontal viewing angles can range from small to 360 deg and incorporate a range of entrance configurations to suit your building. Vertical viewing angles depend on if the screen is floor mounted, raised or suspended. It can even be tilted. D&D provide a comprehensive site installation service using our experienced in house fixing team and qualified supervisors totaling around 20, including the provision of project specific RAMS (risk assessments, method statements), O&M manuals and commissioning documents. When required our shell scheme package of works can also include primary support steelwork, secondary ground works, internal skins, crane hire, hoists and fixed/mobile access. All our site staff carry CSCS industry cards and receive appropriate inductions, CITB handbooks, toolbox talks, training and ongoing guidance. Senior staff have received supervisor training SSSTS and SMSTS as appropriate. We are, for example an Aspire Defence approved contractor, participated as a supporting supplier to the MoD Synthetic Environment Tower of Excellence and have Constructionline certification. On our larger projects, in addition to regular Director and management visits, our safety consultant visits to ensure our supervisors and team are meeting their H&S responsibilities and working to agreed method statements and risk assessments.
